Examining The Accuracy Of Plymouth Plantation Religion Essay Bradfords Plymouth Plantation, contains records of the Pilgrims settlement in the New World. This document represents the history of one of the first colonies in New England that founded our countries religion, culture, and history. Some historians wonder if Bradfords documentation of the Plymouth settlement is accurate. Even though Bradfords personal views and bias are evident throughout the passage there is still a lot of factual evidence that would be lost with out this manuscript. Bradford has been an inspirational writer to many, such as Cotton Mather, William Hubbard, Thomas Prince, and Thomas Hutchinson. Of Plymouth Plantation, is separated into two books dating from 1620 to 1650. Bradford, apparently wrote the first book in 1630 (Shuffleton), and goes into detail of the Separatist movement. The main points of the book include: the Separatists afraid of religious persecution, fleeing from England to Holland, settling in Leiden, their voyage on the Mayflower, and their experiences in New England. Bradford orders his material not only chronologically but teleologically, into chapters that are organized topically as well as in terms of sequences of events, and he indicates in numerous ways that his history is plotted and moving toward a particular outcome (Read). The way in which Bradford wrote this book is why it has been so influential. It is easy to follow and a timeline is evident throughout. He goes into detail on instances that he finds important. For example, in what he called the First Encounter, an Indian attack occurred and he went into meticulous detail of how the Indians loo ked, sounded, and how they interacted with the pilgrims. But about midnight they heard hideous and great cryà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã‚ ¦they concluded it was a company of wolves or such like wild beasts (Perkins 56). This text gives insight to how the Indians responded to the Pilgrims invasion. The second book was written between 1646 and 1650, and is a form of annals dating from 1630 to 1650, which tells of the Pilgrims day to day life. His use of annals proved accurate when compared to colony records that would have been available to him at that time. Bradford writes most of history out of nostalgia (Wenska). This means that he has a yearning for the past and uses bible verses to compare to whats happening in the colony. This is seen when Bradford compares the Plymouth settlers to the Israelites of the old testament, when their time of wandering is over, spiritual principles are settled, and now the Pilgrims must face the spiritual uncertainties of history as they strive to build their own Can aan (Shuffleton). In the bible, the Israelites were Gods chosen people, and God granted them the power to dominate Canaan. Everything was made abundant to them, until they started to sin. Once they started to defy Gods word, God took away the inheritance he had given them. Bradford says this in hopes that his Separatists can overcome their sinful nature and remain faithful to God, and in return keep New England, the land God has granted them. His own personal beliefs and views were definitely evident throughout the text. He regarded himself as an instrument of God (Perkins 49). He believed that God helped people overcome obstacles through faith, à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã‚ ¦but they cried unto the Lord and he heard their voice and looked on their adversity (Shuffleton). On the Mayflower there was a young man who thought highly of himself and cursed the sick. But it pleased God before they came half seas over, to smite this young man with a grievous disease, of which he died in a desperate manner, and so was himself the first that was thrown overboard. Thus his curses light on his own head, and it was an astonishment to all his fellows for they noted it to be the just hand of God upon him (Perkins 51). This text shows Bradfords belief that God has a hand in everything was shared by the Separatists. In his description of Plymouth, there were two rather sharply divided groupsthe saints, or members of the Separatist church, and the strange rs, or Non-separatistsà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã‚ ¦ Obviously Bradford held the saints in much higher esteem then he did the strangers, who were often disruptive of the peace of the colony (Westbrook). His favoritism can also be seen when he omits most of the facts concerning incidents when the Separatists are being disloyal to God. For example when they fight amongst themselves in Amsterdam, or slaughter the Indians at Wessagusset. But, in Plymouth in 1642, when there were outbreaks of burglary, adultery, and fornification (Westbrook), he didnt seize to leave out any details of their wickedness. After Bradford discusses the outbreak of flagrant sin he ends his narrative with the headings, Anno 1647, and Anno 1648, leaving them blank. Peter Gays says, Bradford ends his history in silence (Shuffleton). One can also tell hes partial to the Separatists by his depictions of characters. He differentiates between admiral characters who, are members of the Separatist congregation and the despicable ones , who are either unchurched or have Anglican sympathies (Westbrook). When he speaks of William Brewster whom he admires and considers a father figure, he speaks only of his strengths. When speaking of someone he dislikes he explains their weaknesses, and why they are not trustworthy. His tendency seems to be toward caricature and ridicule in depicting persons whom he disliked, such as Lyford, Weston, Thomas Morton, and Oldham (Westbrook). Many historians have used Plymouth Plantation as a resource in writing their books, due to the accuracy and detailed history of the early settlement. This entire passage has been treated as an early interpretation of the American landscape and an illustration of English preconceptions about that landscape as wilderness' (Read). Nathaniel Morton, Bradfords nephew, had copied large parts from Plymouth Plantation and was considered very important when his uncles original works had been lost. Increase Mather used it as a source for his account of Indian Wars. Increases son, Cotton, later used it for his own history of the Plymouth Colony. William Hubbard used it in his writing of the General History of New England from the Discovery to MDCLXXX. Thomas Prince quoted and paraphrased many passages in his Chronological History of New England in the form Annals in 1736. It has been influential because of how Bradford handled time relationships, characterized individuals and groups, and focuse d on events that he thought were important. Bradford helped to demonstrate the workings of divine providence for the edification of future generations (Gould). This document has saved past history that would have otherwise been lost. The years since these early literary historians wrote has neither dulled nor lessened our admiration for Bradford as either historian or man of letters (Wenska). It will continue to contribute to the American culture for generations to come. Bradfords Of Plymouth Plantation can not be classified as objective history, because he incorporated too much of his own personal beliefs and values. Instead it can be used as a history book for the foundation of New England. Early authors saw its importance and incorporated it into their own writings. It has helped shape our differing religions, culture, and literature that can be found in todays era.

This paper is going to examine the Vodacom Tanzania company, to see how they implement Strategic corporate communication techniques and make the company the so successful in mobile communication industry in the country. The study also is interested to know how Vodacom communicates with its employees, the external audiences and other stake holders. INTRODUCTION The field of corporate communication has developed to a large extent since its first inception in the mid-90s. Corporate communication began as what many of us recognize as Public Relations (PR). The function of earlier PR departments was focused on preventing media from getting too close to management. Argenti argues that â€Å"the first PR professional were asked to protect the company from bad publicity, often by ‘spinning’ damaging news in a positive light. † This idea became popular through the 1960s, however, organizations soon found that external communication was not the only solution to their communication problems. The mixing of national economies into the international economy through trade, foreign direct investment and the spread of technology has changed the world of business in so many ways. Companies have to manage their communications to the employees and the publics, Industries have to advertise their products so that to face increased competition. The need to employ corporate communication personnel in their businesses was not an option. This paper is going to examine the role of strategic corporate communications in Vodacom Tanzania limited and problems that may arise from this process. Background of Vodacom Tanzania limited. Vodacom Tanzania Ltd is a subsidiary company of Vodacom (Pty) Ltd based in South Africa. Vodacom (Pty) Ltd owns a majority share portion of 65%, the remaining 35% is owned by a local company called Mirambo. Vodacom Tanzania was issued its license in December 1999 and commenced operations in august 2000. By August 2000, Vodacom (T) Ltd completed its state of the art GSM infrastructure and went live on August 14, 2000. On August 15, 2000 Vodacom (T) Ltd officially started its commercial operations. Vodacom is a profit making company. The core functions of Vodacom Tanzania limited is to provide mobile communication services focusing on voice and data communications, with a great emphasis of quality and coverage. Recently, Vodacom has positioned itself as a total communication provider with the launch of Vodacom business which is one stop solution for corporate data needs, specifically catered to address the need for high speed internet, data and Virtual Private Networking (VPN) powered by 3G and WiMAX services. The growth of cross-cultural contacts; arrival of new categories of realization which symbolize cultural diffusion, the desire to increase one's standard of living and enjoy foreign products through free marketing, adoption of new ideas and new technology are the results of globalization policy. Therefore, Vodacom is lucky to operate in such a country where there is no political, economic, social or cultural restrictions. Vodacom Tanzania limited has a corporate communication office. It is reflected in its organization structure, and is referred to as The Head of Division of Corporate Affairs who reports direct to the Vodacom Managing Director. (see appendex1). The corporate Affairs office has to take care of employee relations, community relations, media relations, government relations, investor relations, advertising and marketing communications functions. This indicates that communication is a core value to Vodacom. Vodacom strategic corporate communication plan is to incorporate internal and external stake holders very closely to an overall corporate communication strategy. To keep them informed on the progress of implementing the strategy and to ensure that communications with the Vodacom management is directed to strategic planning development. This strategic corporate communication plan gives Vodacom an opportunity to link strategy with communications and preserves the direct connection with the management. The corporate communication function needs to add significant value to the business and must be fully aligned with those making high impact strategic decision for the company. The company has relationship with GCI & other public-relation firms. Dell looked internet as a source of staying connected with these agencies by using its own extranet for file sharing and online dialogue about specific issues. Talking about its corporate strategy, company strategy came from senior management rather than formal strategy process. Michael Dell found its strategy very important. Dell would find in late 2002 that its commitment to communication played a direct role in allowing company to implement strategy, even during crisis situation. Organizations must be innovative to be able to respond and adapt to the challenges presented by such changes. It is now increasingly evident that those organizations which promote good internal communication reap positive share in meeting these challenges. In most occasions, employees’ disloyalty and lack of commitment to organizational goals are a result of lack of effective two ways communication between management and employees. In a publication titled â€Å"Designing a Communications Strategy† by the International Research Center of Canada (IDRC) it is emphasized that reviewing a company’s past and present ways of dealing with its publics is an essential first step in designing a good corporate communications strategy. Before the launching of a new brand, most of Vodacom employees were kept in the dark except those working in corporate communication department. The Vodacom corporate communication professionals should know that when employees are informed about the brand after the brand has been defined and positioned, they will be a passive audience. As we have learnt in both case studies that Strategic corporate communication is the heart of any organization. Being a communication company, Vodacom Tanzania should make sure that more budget is allocated on research and development, maintain a good communication system within the company, maintain its strategy by communicating with the customers, management and all other important pillars of their company. Whatever plans they have must be well known internally and well communicated externally to their customers and other share holders. That is the biggest secret if they want to remain the number one service provider in mobile communication industry. Conclusion: This paper has analyzed strategy and corporate communication in Vodacom Tanzania. Like any other profit making company Vodacom has strategies and objectives to achieve. Through well articulated corporate communication techniques Vodacom has managed to be the leading mobile company in the country. However, there are some areas need to be improved, especially on strategy development where by internal employees are being side lined so far.

From Cowper, the forerunner of Romantic poetry to Keats’ ‘Ode to a Nightingale’, one can see that the image of ‘nightingale’ has been used quite often in Romantic poems. Such a miniscule part of the vastness of nature has captured the attention of many Romantic poets, yet their views on this plain singer can be contrasting. By comparing Charlotte Smith’s ‘To a Nightingale’ and Coleridge’s ‘The Nightingale, A Conversation Poem’, one can see both similarities and differences in how the two poets portray nature and the nightingale while incorporating their own emotions and wishes. The first thing one should note about poems is the form. Both ‘To a Nightingale’ and ‘The Nightingale, A Conversation Poem’ are in iambic pentameter, which gives poems a conversational tone, but Smith uses scheme of Italian sonnet while Coleridge’s poem is in blank verse. One can take note of the contrasti ng atmosphere portrayed in the poems because of the difference in form, since Smith’s poem, although in sonnet form, is elegy-like. This and the rhyming scheme in sonnets gives her poem a lamenting, restricted voice whereas the melodious free form of Coleridge’s poem makes it more celebrative, more casual for the audience. On Mars Essay Assignment Oliver Sacks is a very famous doctor of neurology as well as a writer. He spent most of his adult life treating patients. Oliver Sacks mostly concentrated on disorders of the brain and nervous system. In a lot of the cases that Sacks dealt with, there was nothing he was able to do to heal the patients. His goal was to find a way to live with and accept their condition as well as possible. Sacks enjoyed dealing with cases mostly about experiences of real people struggling to live with unusual conditions. That’s where he wanted to find ways to help these patients to the best of his and medical ability out there. Throughout his cases he studied he came across patients who had different syndromes such as the Korsakov’s syndrome which is a memory loss disorder. He also came across patients with Tourette’s Syndrom which is a disorder of repeated movements, and these are just several of them that he studied and treated. Sacks’ had a particular method of investigation for all of his patients. He used a more of â€Å"personalistic† method that involved an understanding of the patient’s self and identity. He believed strongly that patients could be taught to adapt, or get used to their conditions as fully as possible even if they remained sick. He did it in a matter where not only he examined and learned patient’s history but he became involved in their personal lives as well. Oliver Sacks who was a neurologist used various techniques where he learned each individual differently in a very personal and respectful manner. He examined their qualities from inside out. Sacks would make time out of his busy schedule to do private outings with each one of the patients who he was treating. He made arrangements to be part of activities in such a way where he can learn more about the problem and have better idea of how to treat these individuals. I believe Sacks had several reasons for approaching his investigations in such unique matters. By getting very friendly with his clients he was able to find out things that no one else would. Sacks tried to get to know his clients by spending time with them out of his work schedule. Oliver Sacks discovers individuals by doing activities with them. He would try to study each case in each unique way. He took his patients to concerts where he was able to see how they react in different circumstance and what part of brain they were mostly using. He would note that some memory would be there for a certain amount of time and then they would go back to their own ways. For example, in the story of the â€Å"Last Hippie†, Greg would become a different person when he was around music or you talked to him about certain musicians. That was Greg’s passion and the only thing that changed and altered his mood. Although, once some time passed and music was no where around, Greg went back to his grumpy old self. He would be in his own little world. He would act very strangely around people. Greg would also make no sense when you were having a conversation with him. The people that Sacks studies are both â€Å"patients† and subjects to him I believe. In one perspective when he has a case that he studies it can be classified as a subject because he has so many cases that he studies and observes patients in. Although, on the other hand it can be classified to him as patients because he actually cares about each and every one of them and tries to hang out and spend extra time with them. Not many doctors these days show such emotions and attention as Sacks did to his patients. He truly got involved in each case he studied very deeply and became very close with his patients. Having a disease can take over your mind and body. You become a different individual, different person and act sometimes in way where people don’t believe a person can change in such a way. Having a disease where you lose your memory and forget stuff what occurred to you in your previous years, can affect you tremendously. You can act very immature, say things not according to your age or even do things that are also very odd. Greg, in the â€Å"Last Hippie†, acted very strangely his parents described once he got diagnosed with his disease. When his own parents would talk to him, they said he had odd responses and kind of replied with comments and phrases that made absolutely no sense what so ever, although, Greg had some memory left when he was around music. Greg remained trapped in a distant past because his memory of recent activities only lasts a few minutes. He would act normally, remember songs and get involved in conversations like healthy people would only when he was talking or listening to music. In another Oliver Sack’s story â€Å"To See and Not See† he talks about a 55 year old man who had been blind since he was a child. Many doctors believed that his blindness resulted from a genetic condition and there was nothing able to be done. Although after numerous visit to different specialists, he found doctors who believed he may not be permanently blind. Virgil gets operated on one eye and slowly tries to recover and obtain his vision. Due to not seeing for so many years, he has difficulty adjusting and understanding the light and images moving in front of him. As a blind man, Virgil had a rich life. He enjoyed great freedom because of his excellent sense of touch, hearing and smell. But with sight, he was unable to understand the visual work around him. With such big change made in Virgil’s life, he was more aware and fearful of his condition. It took some time for him to get used to seeing objects and recognizing people after all. It can also be very hard for a patient with a disease to understand themselves. Some diseases have you more aware of what’s going on around you and sometimes you are living in your own world. Diseases usually affect people not only physically, but also emotionally, as contracting and living with many diseases can alter ones perspective on life, and their personality. A person with the disease right away begins to understand his or hers pains and problems that only they understand. Living a life with a disease is sometimes very difficult not only for that individual but for people that are taking care of you. These patients very often become very afraid of the disease they have and try to find a way to cure it. They visit many different clinics and hospitals to see if a cure or treatment can be found for them. Getting treated by specialists, attending different medical treatments and just following a very different everyday life can make it very difficult to understand themselves. After reading An Anthropologist on Mars, it has informed me of a different understanding of concepts such as â€Å"normality† and â€Å"handicap†. To some people having s minor disease or disorder they can be considered as handicap, but to others you can be a completely normal person. For example, having autism is so common in this era, that a lot of people would classify you as a normal individual, but many people would not and consider you handicap because you have a disease. Now that I have read many cases of Oliver Sacks, I understand that not all people are handicap, everyone is normal in their own way and to their own environment. You learn to adapt to life with different disease and disabilities. You become acquainted with people who also deal with same issues as you which make’s it a lot simpler on the patient. To your own parents their children are always considered normal. Your relatives and close people around you would always consider you a normal person even though you might have some kind of a disease; they learn to accept you the way you are. But to strangers who just meet you and notice something abnormal, you will be considered handicap and not normal. Over all, I greatly enjoyed reading Oliver Sacks cases and finding out more about diseases that I was never aware of before. It made me realize how people can have a disease and still enjoy life after all. It made me learn to appreciate people more that have a disorder or some kind of disability because they always have a special passion for life. Since, I want to be a medical professional when I am done with my studies, I found all of Oliver Sacks cases extremely educating and kept me very interested to read further into the problems that his patients were dealing with. As I am going further into my career of becoming a nurse in the near future I will definitely be more aware of special abilities that patients can have when having a disorder that they are living with for life. Life needs to go on and everyone must make the best out of what they have in life. In the near future I will definitely read more of Oliver Sacks books and the cases that he likes to present to his readers.
