Comparing The And Nightingale And The Nightingale

From Cowper, the forerunner of Romantic poetry to Keats’ ‘Ode to a Nightingale’, one can see that the image of ‘nightingale’ has been used quite often in Romantic poems. Such a miniscule part of the vastness of nature has captured the attention of many Romantic poets, yet their views on this plain singer can be contrasting. By comparing Charlotte Smith’s ‘To a Nightingale’ and Coleridge’s ‘The Nightingale, A Conversation Poem’, one can see both similarities and differences in how the two poets portray nature and the nightingale while incorporating their own emotions and wishes. The first thing one should note about poems is the form. Both ‘To a Nightingale’ and ‘The Nightingale, A Conversation Poem’ are in iambic pentameter, which gives poems a conversational tone, but Smith uses scheme of Italian sonnet while Coleridge’s poem is in blank verse. One can take note of the contrasti ng atmosphere portrayed in the poems because of the difference in form, since Smith’s poem, although in sonnet form, is elegy-like. This and the rhyming scheme in sonnets gives her poem a lamenting, restricted voice whereas the melodious free form of Coleridge’s poem makes it more celebrative, more casual for the audience. On Mars Essay Assignment Oliver Sacks is a very famous doctor of neurology as well as a writer. He spent most of his adult life treating patients. Oliver Sacks mostly concentrated on disorders of the brain and nervous system. In a lot of the cases that Sacks dealt with, there was nothing he was able to do to heal the patients. His goal was to find a way to live with and accept their condition as well as possible. Sacks enjoyed dealing with cases mostly about experiences of real people struggling to live with unusual conditions. That’s where he wanted to find ways to help these patients to the best of his and medical ability out there. Throughout his cases he studied he came across patients who had different syndromes such as the Korsakov’s syndrome which is a memory loss disorder. He also came across patients with Tourette’s Syndrom which is a disorder of repeated movements, and these are just several of them that he studied and treated. Sacks’ had a particular method of investigation for all of his patients. He used a more of â€Å"personalistic† method that involved an understanding of the patient’s self and identity. He believed strongly that patients could be taught to adapt, or get used to their conditions as fully as possible even if they remained sick. He did it in a matter where not only he examined and learned patient’s history but he became involved in their personal lives as well. Oliver Sacks who was a neurologist used various techniques where he learned each individual differently in a very personal and respectful manner. He examined their qualities from inside out. Sacks would make time out of his busy schedule to do private outings with each one of the patients who he was treating. He made arrangements to be part of activities in such a way where he can learn more about the problem and have better idea of how to treat these individuals. I believe Sacks had several reasons for approaching his investigations in such unique matters. By getting very friendly with his clients he was able to find out things that no one else would. Sacks tried to get to know his clients by spending time with them out of his work schedule. Oliver Sacks discovers individuals by doing activities with them. He would try to study each case in each unique way. He took his patients to concerts where he was able to see how they react in different circumstance and what part of brain they were mostly using. He would note that some memory would be there for a certain amount of time and then they would go back to their own ways. For example, in the story of the â€Å"Last Hippie†, Greg would become a different person when he was around music or you talked to him about certain musicians. That was Greg’s passion and the only thing that changed and altered his mood. Although, once some time passed and music was no where around, Greg went back to his grumpy old self. He would be in his own little world. He would act very strangely around people. Greg would also make no sense when you were having a conversation with him. The people that Sacks studies are both â€Å"patients† and subjects to him I believe. In one perspective when he has a case that he studies it can be classified as a subject because he has so many cases that he studies and observes patients in. Although, on the other hand it can be classified to him as patients because he actually cares about each and every one of them and tries to hang out and spend extra time with them. Not many doctors these days show such emotions and attention as Sacks did to his patients. He truly got involved in each case he studied very deeply and became very close with his patients. Having a disease can take over your mind and body. You become a different individual, different person and act sometimes in way where people don’t believe a person can change in such a way. Having a disease where you lose your memory and forget stuff what occurred to you in your previous years, can affect you tremendously. You can act very immature, say things not according to your age or even do things that are also very odd. Greg, in the â€Å"Last Hippie†, acted very strangely his parents described once he got diagnosed with his disease. When his own parents would talk to him, they said he had odd responses and kind of replied with comments and phrases that made absolutely no sense what so ever, although, Greg had some memory left when he was around music. Greg remained trapped in a distant past because his memory of recent activities only lasts a few minutes. He would act normally, remember songs and get involved in conversations like healthy people would only when he was talking or listening to music. In another Oliver Sack’s story â€Å"To See and Not See† he talks about a 55 year old man who had been blind since he was a child. Many doctors believed that his blindness resulted from a genetic condition and there was nothing able to be done. Although after numerous visit to different specialists, he found doctors who believed he may not be permanently blind. Virgil gets operated on one eye and slowly tries to recover and obtain his vision. Due to not seeing for so many years, he has difficulty adjusting and understanding the light and images moving in front of him. As a blind man, Virgil had a rich life. He enjoyed great freedom because of his excellent sense of touch, hearing and smell. But with sight, he was unable to understand the visual work around him. With such big change made in Virgil’s life, he was more aware and fearful of his condition. It took some time for him to get used to seeing objects and recognizing people after all. It can also be very hard for a patient with a disease to understand themselves. Some diseases have you more aware of what’s going on around you and sometimes you are living in your own world. Diseases usually affect people not only physically, but also emotionally, as contracting and living with many diseases can alter ones perspective on life, and their personality. A person with the disease right away begins to understand his or hers pains and problems that only they understand. Living a life with a disease is sometimes very difficult not only for that individual but for people that are taking care of you. These patients very often become very afraid of the disease they have and try to find a way to cure it. They visit many different clinics and hospitals to see if a cure or treatment can be found for them. Getting treated by specialists, attending different medical treatments and just following a very different everyday life can make it very difficult to understand themselves. After reading An Anthropologist on Mars, it has informed me of a different understanding of concepts such as â€Å"normality† and â€Å"handicap†. To some people having s minor disease or disorder they can be considered as handicap, but to others you can be a completely normal person. For example, having autism is so common in this era, that a lot of people would classify you as a normal individual, but many people would not and consider you handicap because you have a disease. Now that I have read many cases of Oliver Sacks, I understand that not all people are handicap, everyone is normal in their own way and to their own environment. You learn to adapt to life with different disease and disabilities. You become acquainted with people who also deal with same issues as you which make’s it a lot simpler on the patient. To your own parents their children are always considered normal. Your relatives and close people around you would always consider you a normal person even though you might have some kind of a disease; they learn to accept you the way you are. But to strangers who just meet you and notice something abnormal, you will be considered handicap and not normal. Over all, I greatly enjoyed reading Oliver Sacks cases and finding out more about diseases that I was never aware of before. It made me realize how people can have a disease and still enjoy life after all. It made me learn to appreciate people more that have a disorder or some kind of disability because they always have a special passion for life. Since, I want to be a medical professional when I am done with my studies, I found all of Oliver Sacks cases extremely educating and kept me very interested to read further into the problems that his patients were dealing with. As I am going further into my career of becoming a nurse in the near future I will definitely be more aware of special abilities that patients can have when having a disorder that they are living with for life. Life needs to go on and everyone must make the best out of what they have in life. In the near future I will definitely read more of Oliver Sacks books and the cases that he likes to present to his readers.

Slaughterhouse Five Vonnegut's When one begins to analyze a military novel it is important to first look at the historical context in which the book was written. On the nights of February 13-14 in 1944 the city of Dresden, Germany was subjected to one of the worst air attacks in the history of man. By the end of the bombing 135,000 to 250,000 people had been killed by the combined forces of the United States and the United Kingdom. Dresden was different then Berlin or many of the other military targets which were attacked during World War II because it was never fortified or used for strategic purposes and, therefore, was not considered a military target. Because of it's apparent safety, thousands of refugees from all over Europe converged on Dresden for protection (Klinkowitz 2-3). Dresden's neutrality was broken and the resulting attacks laid waste, what Vonnegut called, the Florence of the Elbe. Kurt Vonnegut was a witness to this event and because of fate, had been spared. He wrote Slaughterhouse Fi ve to answer the question that resounded through his head long after the bombs could no longer be heard. Why me?- a frequent question asked by survivors of war. Vonnegut was tormented by this question and through Billy Pilgrim, the protagonist in Slaughterhouse Five, he attempts to reconcile the guilt which one feels when one is randomly saved from death, while one's friends and loved ones perish. Billy Pilgrim's own life was spared, but was never able to live with himself knowing that so many others had died. The feelings of guilt which emerged from his having survived the bombing of Dresden and from Billy's fortunate escape from death under the shelter of the fifth Slaughterhouse haunted Billy through much of his life. Billy Pilgrim did not consider his survival a blessing, but a curse. A curse to be forced to live on with the guilt of survival. Billy Pilgrim faced such tremendous guilt, that he spent his entire life after Dresden trying to alleviate himself of it. His guilt is in many ways comparable to the guilt felt by the survivors of the Holocaust. Many Holocaust survivors had to face their own Why me? question. However, many Holocaus t survivors were able to reconcile their feelings of guilt or put it out of their minds. This solution was never viable for Billy Pilgrim. Billy's guilt made life so unbearable that he could no longer live with himself and he rejected the life that had been granted to him. There was no answer to Billy's question because war is not logical, nor is it just. Never could one give a justification for the fortuitous slaughtering of the innocent, which claimed the lives of Dresden's inhabitants. This idea is exemplified in the secondary title Slaughterhouse Five is known by, The Children's Crusade. The Children's Crusade was one of the many Christian Holy Wars which aimed on destroying the Muslim people. The Children's Crusade was really a ploy by entrepreneurs to sell Christian children into slavery. Thousands of children were killed on ships en-route to the slave market and many others were sold, never to be seen again. Vonnegut gives the Children's Crusade as an example of the atrocitie s and in-humane acts which transpire under the auspices of War. That is why Billy Pilgrim invents a world where a justification can be given, where life and death are meaningless and feelings of guilt disappear. The only way Billy Pilgrim can confront this guilt is to excuse his survival and trivialize the gift of life and the cruelty of death. He creates a new world where he can be free from his guilt. That world is called Tralfamador. The Traflamadorian world provided Billy Pilgrim with the escape that he needed from his guilt. The Traflamadorian people are not locked in a three dimensional realm. They are not locked in the frames of time to which the human world is forced to live in. Traflamadorians can shift through time as seamlessly as humans can walk towards a point. In the simulation of the climate change for 1850-2100, the areas with increased skewness were noticed to have increased temperature during the warm days above the summer average temperature. The regions which had decreased skewness, either a small increase in temperature were noticed or there were no temperature rising at all during warm days under ephemeral global warming. Type 2 Diabetes. Type 2 DiabetesValentine (1998) defines Type 2 diabetes as a lifelong disease that is characterized by high levels of glucose in the blood. Through research, Type 2 diabetes has been found to be the most common form of diabetes. This type of diabetes is caused by the problem of the body making less insulin or not utilizing the available insulin appropriately. Insulin is very important as it helps to move excess blood glucose into cells so that it can be stored as fats and later utilized for energy production. In case excess blood sugar is not absorbed into cells for it to be converted into fats, a problem called hyperglycemia takes place which is characterized by the build up of abnormal high levels of glucose in the blood. Normally, as the levels of glucose in the blood stream increases, the pancreas is triggered to produce more insulin. But in this case the insulin becomes inadequate that it cannot keep up the demand of the body (Clarke, et al. 2003).  Ã‚  Ã‚   Research findings by Levin, et al. (2005) show that insulin resistance cases are mostly experienced by those individuals who are overweight. This is because fat usually interferes with the ability of the body to utilize insulin. Most of the thin people who are affected by this disease are the elderly especially aged above 45 years of age since their body organ system is weaker that it cannot easily convert the fats in the body into energy to allow insulin work effectively. In some cases genetics and family history play a significant role in acquisition of this common type of diabetes such that the disease is inherited by the progeny if the parents were affected. Ethnicity is another risk factor, for instance Hispanic Americans, African Americans, and Native Americans have been found to have increased rates of diabetes (Lasser, et al., 2006). By Poland, et al. (1998), it is apparent that the choices individuals make in a daily basis determine their physiological well being.   There are a number of steps to enable an individual have a healthier lifestyle which can reduce or prevent the possibility of developing Type 2 diabetes as well as pre-diabetes. These can comprise of maintaining a healthy weight, eating a healthy and balanced diet, ensuring that one does regular physical activities, by avoiding smoking cigarette, and by keeping one’s health in check. So that an individual can maintain a healthy body weight, it is advisable to exercise the body regularly as well as eat the foods which can provide the body with healthy diet, one should also talk to the concerned healthcare givers regarding the appropriate weight that they should have at that particular time, and it is better for an individual to learn how to calculate their Body Mass Index (Pearlin, 1992). To ensure a healthy and balanced diet, it is advisable to eat a diet constituting a variety of foods for instance protein rich foods, green vegetables for vitamins, and carbohydrates. Plenty of fruits and vegetables should be eaten daily especially 5 to 10 vegetables and fruits per day. Meals with high fiber content especially soluble fiber should be consumed to enable the hormone insulin perform well. This is because the soluble fiber slows down the release of ingested food into the intestine and prevents the blood sugar from elevating rapidly. Thus for the patients of Type 2 diabetes, taking enough soluble fiber is often very important as they will be allowed to take a smaller amount of diabetes medication. Eating less salt and fats can also ensure  Ã‚   physiological well being of an individual’s body as the accumulation of fats hinders the insulin from carrying out its function of converting glucose into fats. The amount of alcohol that an individual consumes should also be limited since a lot of it can result into high blood pressure and consequently bring about the risk of Type 2 diabetes (Gropper Smith, 2008).  Ã‚  Ã‚   Regular physical activities ensure less fats around the body organs and tissues hence insulin finds conducive environment to work in. It’s advisable that an individual should be active for a period of at least 30 minutes daily. Activities that build strength, flexibility, and endurance are very significant and should be included, and it will be very important if an individual enjoys the activities. Smoking is another dangerous behavior to the well being of an individual since the nicotine narrows the blood vessels and consequently increases blood pressure which is another risk factor for Type 2 diabetes. Some people absorb the second-hand smoke as they get new the smoking zone but never realize that they well be affected the same way the smoking people will be affected. There it is advisable to keep distance from the smoking zones to avoid the consequent effects (Poland, et al. 1998). It is very important to keep one’s health on check, for instance getting enough bed rest by sleeping. Getting enough sleep enables the brain to relax and regain energy for various body activities. Through research findings, it has been found that reduced quantity of sleep can weaken appetite regulation and the metabolism of glucose resulting in amplified risk of obesity which at long run will bring about diabetes. Consecutive nights of interrupted sleep seem to put individuals at increased risk of getting infected with type 2 diabetes. Being active is also very crucial since physical activities reduce stress which could otherwise hinder the normal functioning of the body’s organ system. Managing high blood pressure, glucose and cholesterol reduces the tendency of being attacked by Type 2 diabetes (Pearlin, 1992).   Indubitably, it is very important for an individual to be engaged in regular physical activities for at least 30 minutes every day. This can considerably reduce the amount of fats in the body which could otherwise reduce the activity of the insulin hormone.   Regular exercises also enhance quick oxidation of excess sugars hence reducing the level of glucose in the blood to normal. Measures like regular physical activities have also been found to bring about health problems to individuals especially when they are sick. It is not advisable for an individual to exercise when for instance their blood sugar level exceeds300 mg/dl, they have difficulties with breathing, they are sick in whichever way, their urine have got ketones, or they are experiencing any prickling, numbness or pain in their legs. If one’s medication is peaking, it is also important not to exercise (Frank, 2005). The fruit diet has been found to reduce the incidences of Type 2 diabetes in the world population. Due to misconceptions, this has been found to have its shortcomings to the well being of an individual. There should be a specification on the type of fruits and vegetables that should be taken in plenty and those which should be taken in low quantities. For instance, some fruits contain more sugar than others such that if fruits with a lot of sugar are consumed in large quantities every day, the level of sugar in the blood stream will increase hence putting an individual into the risk of becoming diabetic. It is advisable that a serving of fruit should contain carbohydrates amounting to 15 grams. Therefore it is advantageous to consume low-carbohydrate fruits since they can be consumed in plenty thus reducing the incidences of Type 2 diabetes (Levin, et al. 2005).   According to Lasser, et al. (2006), in America a special type of food called pizza is usually very important in preventing diabetes. So, most of the individuals in the American population eat the pizza in a daily basis since it is a healthy food containing complex carbohydrates, proteins, and vegetables. By research findings, it has been found that when eaten too much, pizza has its own shortcomings to the American population in spite of it being a balanced diet. This kind of food increases blood sugars to shoot up when eaten too much and as a result can cause diabetes. Pizza is also classified under the food with high fat content. Foods with high fat content like pizza can cause a delayed absorption of carbohydrates for some hours after one has eaten and as a result, the level of blood sugar will be kept elevated for about 8 hours (L. Emergency management Essay The safety of child will always be my number one priority. I will always try my best to protect children in my care from hurting themselves, however, accidents do happen. My premises have been checked and they meet the requirements of the Early Years Foundation Stage in England. I also regularly review, update and practise my safety routines, including fire drills. As a registered childminder, I am legally required to have a valid first-aid certificate. I can administer basic first-aid treatment, and my first-aid box is clearly labelled and easily accessible. It is stored in my utility room. Parent contact numbers are with the first-aid box. †¢ I hold written permission from parents in Childs Record Folder to seek emergency treatment for their child if it is needed. †¢ All accidents will be recorded in an accident book. †¢ As a registered provider I must notify Ofsted of any serious accidents, illnesses or injuries or the death of any child whilst in my care and any action I may have taken within 14 days of an incident occurring. If I am in need of support or advice regarding a serious illness or incident involving a child in my care I may contact National Childminding Association who will log information regarding the incident with regard to their safeguarding policy. A NCMA designated officer will be assigned to my case and all the information given to them will be kept confidentially unless their appears to be a child protection issue which will be reported accordingly. I have developed plans on what to do in the event of an emergency. I carry a contact card for each child. I have also a card on me that explains that I am a registered Childminder. I will make sure to organise outings to fit in with the needs of the children, and ensure that I have the necessary equipment and resources to keep them safe. The Sniper How does the author depict the turmoil and plight in a war-torn city in â€Å"The Sniper†? Anger, pain, death and remorse- all unpleasant, but all are faced and handled in every war. In Liam O'Flaherty's "The Sniper," all of these are brought to an acute reality in a single war-torn city. Strong cerebral convictions and opposing philosophies, due to which people want to destroy the seemingly â€Å"wrong† plague this world and are the main reason for plight. To aid in his creation of such emotional conflict, turmoil and plight, the author has portrayed the sniper as a very controversial character. This story is oriented around one character in the Civil War which he should not even be in as he is mentioned to be a â€Å"student† in the story. The story whose main theme is violence, attempts to chronicle the short span of fanaticism that inspires youth that leads to turmoil in the first place. In this chaotic situation however, fanaticism is what one may need in order to survive and this is exactly what the sniper is facing. This is shown when the sniper is said to be the â€Å"student with the face of an ascetic†. He has one task to perform- to kill the soldiers of the Free States. However, the most important line that catches the attention of the reader is â€Å"†¦the eyes of a man who is used to looking at death.† This is very ironic as he was earlier compared to a student who is like a symbol for innocence where now he is spoken of as a murderer. He is engrossed in fulfilling his duty and is now a student of violence.... ...s’ the life of a soldier. The gory sights in the city of Dublin, torn apart and paralysed with war and fear is depicted by people bleeding in the gutters till they die and rapid gunfire everywhere followed by a deafening silence. Killing is done in cold blood and even then, the sniper maintains calm until he kills his opponent sniper on the opposite rooftop. This calmness in goriness clearly justifies the turmoil and the plight that the author shows in this short story. The author uses the course and characters of the story to chart the course of the characters in every scene of violence everywhere. The emphasis given to the bloodshed, the war, the loss of life is more than what is given to the feelings, the people and the life and in this way Liam O’Flaherty has depicted turmoil and plight in the war-torn city in this short story titled â€Å"The Sniper†.

Van Gogh and Kandinsky

Starry Night was painted by Vincent Van Gogh in 1889 in the village of Saint-Remy, in the south of France. It is an oil on canvas post-impressionist painting which depicts the view from Van Sago's window at night, although it was painted from memory during the day. Van Sago's artworks contrast greatly with those of Wassail Sandusky. Composition VII was painted by Wassail Sandusky in 1913, during his time in Munich, Germany. The style is abstract and very expressive. Vincent Van Gogh was part of the post-impressionist movement, which painted in the late sass. He studied art in Belgium, and in 1886 he traveled to Paris with his rather.There he met Pissarro, Monet, and Gauguin, and he was influenced by their use of short brush strokes to convey movement. A technique which is clearly evident in his artworks. Van Gogh moved south to Arles in 1888, were he tried to capture the warmth and sunlight of the southern French countryside. His artworks became brighter in color and the style became more dynamic. Van Gogh aimed to express his emotions in his artworks though the multiple brush strokes and use of bold color. Art in the late sass was moving on from the impressionist style towards the expressionist style.This movement is known as the post-impressionist movement. Post-impressionist artworks still focus on capturing light, although they are more emotionally expressive than impressionist artworks. Van Gogh admired the works of Jules Breton, in particular Bretons work SST. Johns Eve, which depicts peasant girls dancing on a summer evening. A village with a church and the crescent moon over it can be seen in the background, and it is believed this influenced Van Sago's artwork Starry Night. Starry Night is a perfect example of a post-impressionist artwork.It was painted in June 1889, using oil paint on canvas. The artwork depicts the village of Saint-Remy, as seen from Van Sago's window in the Saint-Remy Hospital where he was staying. An enormous sky dominates the pict ure and falls upon the quiet town. The large halos on the stars dwarf the small quiet town beneath, perhaps suggesting that humans are tiny in comparison with nature and the stars. The style is both expressive, impressionistic and semi-realistic. However, unlike impressionist artworks, this painting does not focus purely on capturing light, but also in portraying Van Sago's emotions.His desperate thoughts, feeling of disconnection from the world and need o escape are visible in the night scene, as well as the energetic brush strokes and the vibrant colors of the stars against the dark blues of the night. At the time which Vincent Van Gogh painted this painting he was in the Saint-Remy Hospital because of his serious depression (he cut his own ear of. The visible brush strokes create prominent lines, thus giving the painting movement, this is particularly visible in the sky and keeps the viewers eyes constantly following the organic curves and lines.It is believed that the swirling c louds represent his tortured mind and confusion. The vertical lines of the church tower and the cypress tree divide the canvas into thirds, illustrating Van Sago's use of classical composition. The composition also contributes further to the feeling of movement. A large black structure towers upwards on the far left of the painting, leading the viewers eye into the curves of the sky and on into the center of the painting where the twisting clouds are surrounded brilliant bright stars.The viewers' eye finally rests on the small dark town which, in contrast to the sky, practically blends into the blue mountains. The town and mountains are painted in dark colors so that the viewer's attention is drawn to the sky (the focus of the painting). The large yellow stars dwarf small flecks of yellow in the town and contrast with the sky. This contrast reflects Van Sago's turbulent emotions. White is used to brighten the stars and the sky. The scale of the artwork is 29 x 36 h inches (73. 7 x 9 2. 1 CM). This medium scale does not overwhelm the viewer, but makes them come closer to the artwork as to see the details.Giving the viewer a personal experience of the landscape. The large dark tree in the foreground of the ar left of the painting gives the artwork a sense of perspective, which again makes the experience of the painting more real. After viewing this painting, the audience is left with a glimpse into the tortured soul of Vincent Van Gogh, and they have experienced the landscape of Saint-Remy. Wassail Sandusky was a Russian artist who painted in an abstract style. He aimed to use art as a medium to communicate directly with one's emotions.He wanted it to go straight to one's heart, and strongly believed that figurative forms prevented this. As a young boy he played piano and cello, and this lead him to create a some what musical style of art. He aimed to create artworks which had the same effect on the viewer as the listener of a piece of music has, which is why his artworks had musical titles such as â€Å"composition† and â€Å"improvisations†. Sandusky moved to Germany in 1911, at this time the tension was growing between the different countries, leading up to World War 1 (starting in 1914).Germany was on the brink of war, Just waiting for something to set it into action. The rivalry between Britain and Germany's military forces was extreme, and this political rivalry was taken into the art world. Paris was the centre of the art world and Particularly in Germany he atmosphere would have been extremely chaotic and tense. This is clearly reflected in the busy composition of Sandiness's artworks during this time. In 1913 Wassail Sandusky painted Composition VI', using oil on canvas. Sandusky wanted to portray truths and emotions, which is why this artwork does not depict figurative forms.The traditional oil on canvas medium contrasts with the unusual subject, thus surprising the viewer and increasing the impact of the painting. I t is a painting of monumental scale, being 200 x 300 CM. This overwhelms the viewer, communicating the intense atmosphere of Germany at the time, and Sandiness's lining of confusion and chaos. This feeling of confusion and chaos if further demonstrated by his use of line. The lines in this painting are explosive, there is a mixture of organic and geometric. This creates an image which almost seems to posses its own energy.The painting appears alive and moving, thus drawing the viewer in and engaging with their emotions. In the centre of the painting is a small circle, which could possibly represent the eye of a hurricane. It is surrounded by an outburst of color and lines which at first makes the viewers eye dart around the painting, unsure where to look and overwhelmed at the intensity. Eventually the audience focuses on the dark blue shape in the centre of the canvas, here the lines are closer together and the shapes are strongly outlined.Everything appears to be exploding out fro m the centre of the artwork. Sandusky believed that certain colors could communicate different emotion. The range of colors in this artwork portrays a jumble of emotions. The colors used are bright bold colors which contribute to the overall effect of chaos. The colors are more intense in the centre of the painting, and towards the edge they become more pastel-like. This aids in drawing the attention of the audience to the centre of the painting.By focusing the viewers eye in this way, Sandusky sucks them in to his world of chaos and confusion. The overall mood of the painting is confused and busy. Everything is bright and exploding which reflects the time in which Sandusky painted. The audience experiences the atmosphere of Germany in 1913, particularly how the world could erupt into war at any moment. This color choice in this artwork allows Sandusky to directly communicate with the viewers emotions, and leaves them feeling overwhelmed and bewildered. Vincent Van Sago's Starry Nig ht is an post-impressionist artwork.It aims to communicate Van Sago's experience of the landscape and also his strong emotional feelings. It is classically composed and uses organic forms and flowing lines, giving the artwork movement. It quite different to Wassail Sandiness's Composition VI', which focus's mostly on the viewers emotional experience and communicating the hectic pre World War 1 confusion in Germany, through the use of abstract style and the energetic colors. Unlike Starry Night it does not have an obvious subject. Sandusky has focused completely on conveying emotions and has disregarded any figurative forms.

Religious Fundamentalism Essay

To what extent is it true that religious fundamentalism arose as a reaction to the influences of the West? It is true to the large extent that religious fundamentalism arose as a reaction to the influences of the West due to US backing for Shah, Soviet invasion of Afghanistan and the support for the Mujahedeen. However, Western influence may not be the only factor as globalisation and the failure of modernization and secularization also play a part in the rise of religious fundamentalism. At that point of time, many Islamist organizations define themselves in opposition to the West, and particularly the United States, especially as the latter’s foreign policy has become ever more interventionist in the region. The death of the democracy in Arab states in combination with the collaboration between the US government and many regimes in the Middle East prevented certain opposition groups from expressing themselves. In effect, they have no say in the running of their countries. As a result, they turn to religion for divine validation. The emergence of the overly anti-American Islamic Republic of Iran reflected the wave of popular discontent with US interference and influence throughout the region. The shah was restores to power by an army coup inspired and paid by the US and the UK, despite his lack of popular support. He pressed on with his ‘White Revolution’, which was ever more dependent of Western capital and political leadership. Therefore, due to US backing of the Shah, it provided aids and military supply to him thus making Iranian to resent the Shah and leading to the rise of religious groups. The Soviet invasion of Afghanistan triggered international jihadism. As Muslims around the world, from the Middle East, Southeast Asia in the West volunteered to join the armed struggle. US and Saudi Arabia recruited Muslim volunteers around the world to aid in the jihad with the Soviets. The Afghan experience encouraged individuals such as Osama Bin Laden and Muslim states such as Saudi Arabia, Kuwait and Pakistan to use religious justifications for armed conflict. As the withdrawal of the Soviet Union mythologized as an ‘Islamic’ victory against a secular superpower and strengthened militant  Islamism as an active, energized doctrine through which Islamic political aspirations could be attained. When other Muslims saw this victory, then began to want to be part of the Jihad and thus leading them to creating their own religious fundamentalist group. Therefore, due to the West influence of recruiting Muslim volunteer around the world to go to war, it actually influence s the Muslim and thus leading to the rise of religious fundamentalism. US supports for the mujahedeen in the Afghan war also lead to the rise of the religious fundamentalism. In its fight against the USSR, US not only trained the religiously influenced Mujahedeen elements but also provided arms, economic aid and gave diplomatic support for the Islamic fundamentalist. The jihadi mind set, propagated through training centres throughout the region, began to spread and gain credibility faster than the US had foreseen. The short-sighted nature of American foreign policy in this period helped to create the forces and leadership structures of militant Islamism, forces that emerged as the greatest challenge to US hegemony in the post-Cold War World. The American willingness to fund resistance movements created a cadre of professionally trained, combat-ready Islamists. As a result of its involvement in Afghanistan, the US inadvertently assisted in the creation of a network of highly trained militant. For instance, the Soviet invasion of Afghanistan and the consequent US support for the Islamic militants led to the rise of Taliban in Afghanistan. Taliban spread its ideology to various other regions and as a result, there came into existence a number of organizations and groups championing the ideology of Jihad and other forms of extremist religious forms in different parts of the world. On the flip side, western influence is not the only factor that leads to the rise of religious fundamentalism as the effect of globalisation also plays a part in creating religious groups. In countries that combine some modernization with little or no democratization, religious fundamentalists experience official opposition. They may enjoy an increased capacity to formulate their own agenda and mobilize resources, but have little or no opportunity to promote that agenda in the formal political process. Consequently, regions of the world that have experienced some modernization, little democratization and the widespread diffusion of militant political theologies have produced  radical religious movements such as Al Qaeda and Hezbollah. Globalization increased the capacity of religious actors to project influence, mobilize resources and attract followers across national boundaries. For example, millions of Christian around the world circulated bulletins via email and the internet detailing how their fellow believers were persecuted in far-flung, obscure locales like Orissa in eastern India, Kaduna in Nigeria and Sulawesi in Indonesia. Therefore, due to globalization it then leads to the rise of religious fundamentalism as through globalisation it has made the world a smaller place. An effect of modernization and secularization is another factor that leads to the rise of religious fundamentalism. Modernization, be it gradual or rapid has challenge the religious tradition. Contemporary Islamic fundamentalists incline towards aggressive, politicized and ‘purified’ version of Islamic theology – such as Sharia, argued that the root of mounting social problems in Islamic societies lies in a lack of religious fidelity, corrupting â€Å"secular† elites, ceding to Western manipulation and the absence of a strong universal Islamic community. Christian fundamentalist have made extensive use of political action to promote traditional biblical values and beliefs in the US society, to recreate the US as a Christian nation. Among the governmental secular measure that helped arouse Christian fundamentalism un the US were the proposed Equal Rights Amendment and some key Supreme Court measures, especially the outlawing of prayer in the public schools in 1962 and the granting of abortion rights in 1973. Fundamentalist Christian believes that the Bible forbids abortion and that outlawing the school prayer is an abomination. Therefore, due to the failure of modernization it actually leads to the rise of religious fundamentalism. In conclusion, Western influence plays a big role in the rise of religious fundamentalism. However, the effects of globalisation and the failure of modernization also is one of the factors in the rise of religious fundamentalism.

The impact of the teachers behaviour on the child is frequently emphasized, either by the use of italics or capitals. In the second line of the first stanza, the capital letters in the phrase Very Wrong differentiate the teachers voice and the emphasis she bestows on these words, which effectively shows the solid impression the words had in the childs memory. This is further supported by the ironic remark by the child I forgot what it was, meaning that the teachers accusation left him a more distinct recollection and that his wrong deed was trivialised. Although the poem is conveyed in a lovely, fantasy way, the poet U. A. Fanthorpe criticized the dismissive teacher by portraying her in an unfavorable light. The teacher is never addressed directly rather than by She or Her. Further more, she is described like an animal when she scuttles into the classroom. From this, it could be seen that the poem Half-past Two does not directly state the specific childhood problem, but depicts the teacher in a negative way so that mild sympathy for the little child is provoked. By thinking in a different way, one could deduce that the child suffered from the neglect by his dismissive teacher, but the poem itself does not convey childhood problem in a very intelligible way. On the other hand In conclusion, the poem My Parents kept me away from Children who were Rough conveys childhood problems in a coherent manner, followed by the poem Half-past Two which attempts to communicate to the readers about childhood obstacles though in an indirect way, while the poem Piano conveys nothing about childhood problems. The three poems are well written in their own ways, but the magnitude of which they explore the theme childhood problems is quite different. This could be due to the differences in culture at the time when the poems were written. Piano was composed in 1918, when the world was dominated by men and little attention was paid to the benefits and rights of children. This perhaps explains why D. H. Lawrence focused more on the man and the problems he encountered while spent little time dwelling on childhood problems. The other two poems Half-past Two and My Parents kept me away from Children who were Rough are relatively modern, which endeavoured to pay tributes to children in a situation where they are getting more important.

Climate Change and Its Connections to Norms Lifestyle In May 2014,  two new climate change studies  were published, showing that the catastrophic collapse of the West Antarctic ice sheet is underway, and has been for over two decades. The melting of this sheet is significant because it acts as a linchpin for other glaciers and ice sheets in Antarctica that will, in turn, melt over time. Ultimately, the melting of the south polar ice cap will raise sea levels globally by as much as ten to thirteen feet, adding on to the sixty-nine  feet of sea level rise that scientists have already attributed to human activity.  A 2014 report by The Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) warned  that we are underprepared for extreme climate events, as has been demonstrated by deadly heat waves, droughts, floods, cyclones, and wildfires. Yet, there is a troubling gap between the serious reality depicted by climate change science and the level of concern among the U.S. public. An April 2014 Gallup Poll  found that, while most U.S. adults view climate change as a problem, only 14 percent believe that the implications of climate change have reached a â€Å"crisis† level. A full third of the population believe that climate change is not a problem at all. Sociologist Riley Dunlap, who conducted the poll, also found that self-identified political liberals and moderates are far more concerned about the impacts of climate change than are conservatives. But, regardless of political inclinations, worry and action are two different things. Across the U.S., meaningful action in response to this harsh reality is scant. Research shows clearly that the level of carbon dioxide in the atmospherenow at an unprecedented 401.57  parts per millionis a direct result of the process of capitalist industrialization that has unfolded since the late 18th century. Climate change is a direct consequence of the widespread, now globalized, mass production and consumption of goods, and of the material construction of our habitat that has accompanied it. Yet, despite this reality, production and construction continue unabated. How Consumerism Shapes Our Impact on the Climate Its hard to accept that things need to change. As people who live in a society of consumers, who are steeped in consumerist way of life, we are socially, culturally, economically, and psychologically invested in this system. Our everyday life experiences, our relationships with friends and loved ones, our practices of leisure and amusement, and our personal goals and identities are all organized around practices of consumption. Many of us  measure our self-worth by how much money we make, and by the quantity, quality, and newness of stuff we are able to buy. Most of us, even if we are critically aware of the implications of production, consumption, and waste, can’t help but want more. We are inundated with advertising so clever that it now follows us around the internet and pushes notifications of sales to our smartphones while we shop. We are socialized to consume, and so, when it comes down to it, we don’t really want to respond to climate change. According to the Gallup poll, most of us are willing to acknowledge that it is a problem that must be addressed, but it seems that we expect someone else to do that work. Sure, some of us have made lifestyle adjustments, but how many of us are involved in forms of collective action and activism that work productively toward  social, political, and economic change? Most of us tell ourselves that achieving large-scale, long-term change is the work of the government or corporations, but not us. What Fighting Climate Change Really Means If we believed that a systemic response to climate change was an equally shared responsibility, was our responsibility, we would be responding to it. We would cast aside the mostly symbolic responses, given their marginal impact, of recycling, banning plastic shopping bags, swapping incandescent for halogen lightbulbs, purchasing â€Å"sustainable† and â€Å"green† consumer goods, and driving less. We would recognize that the solution to the dangers of global climate change cannot be found within the very system that has caused the problem. We would, instead, recognize that the system of capitalist production and consumption is the problem. We would renounce the values of this system, and foster new values oriented to sustainable living. Until we do that, we’re all climate change deniers. We may recognize that it exists, but most of us are not protesting in the streets. We might have made some modest adjustments to it, but we’re not giving up our consumer lifestyle. Most of us are in stark denial of our complicity in the changing climate. We are in denial of our responsibility to facilitate the necessary social, cultural, economic, and political changes that could begin to stem the tide of catastrophe. However, meaningful change is possible, but it will only happen if we make it so.
